Reading Proverbs is an education in itself. I was reading in Proverbs 11 this morning (in a quest to continue reading one chapter of Proverbs per day each month). I love how I run across proverbs that have been simmering in the back of my mind and how God uses that time to bring them back to the forefront.
Proverbs 11:3 – “The integrity of the upright guides them, but the unfaithful are destroyed by their duplicity.”
Always do the right thing. Not only because God asks you to do the right thing, but especially since it doesn’t require continually plotting over lies and making sure each person is “played” just right. Those who are duplicitous (living two lives) spend a great amount of time making sure they play the system just right.
Proverbs 11:22 – “Like a gold ring in a pig’s snout is a beautiful woman who shows no discretion.”
The image here is that the gold ring in a pig’s snout (as opposed to a fair maiden’s left ring finger, for example) is worthless and overdone. As a single man in the world but not of the world, I often come into contact with several beautiful women with no discretion, tact, or sense. Solomon cuts to the heart here and says, “Hey, don’t mess around with women who don’t get it or walk about with a lack of sense.” I see where it would be painful living to maintain a relationship, especially marriage, with a woman without sense in the Lord.
Caveat – this goes for men, too. A handsome man with no sense, no direction, and no ways to seek wisdom is pretty worthless, too.
Well, off to work and play!
